Irish police, with Europol's assistance, cracked a Bitcoin wallet linked to a drug dealer, seizing assets valued at more than $35 million.
Irish national police have successfully accessed a Bitcoin wallet connected to Clifton Collins, a convicted drug dealer, and transferred 500 Bitcoin to Coinbase on Tuesday. The wallet, part of 12 linked to Collins, contained assets worth over $35 million at the time of seizure.
Operation Details and International Support
Ireland’s Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) announced that they gained access to the wallet with help from Europol's European Cybercrime Centre. Europol provided technical expertise and decryption resources during operational meetings held at their headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands.
Collins was sentenced to five years in prison in 2017 for growing and selling cannabis, as reported by The Irish Times. Police investigations revealed that he used drug proceeds to purchase around 6,000 Bitcoin in late 2011 and early 2012, stored across 12 wallets.
The wallet in question was labeled 'Clifton Collins: Lost Keys' by blockchain intelligence platform Arkham. It transferred the 500 Bitcoin more than a decade after the coins were first deposited, highlighting the rarity of recovering lost cryptocurrency access.
According to Arkham, Collins controls 14 addresses holding a total of 5,500 Bitcoin, valued at over $391 million. The CAB's statement confirmed the seizure, emphasizing the use of advanced decryption methods to overcome the lost access codes.
Collins claimed the keys, printed on a sheet of paper inside a fishing rod case, were stolen before his arrest. Police stated that the keys were likely discarded when his rental home was cleared out after his sentencing.
CoinTelegraph reported that most lost Bitcoin private keys are irretrievable due to public-key cryptography, making this recovery a significant exception. The CAB and An Garda Síochána have been contacted for further comments, but no additional details were available at the time of publication.
