The Reserve Bank of Australia endorses tokenization, projecting significant economic benefits and exploring new infrastructure.
Australia's Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has expressed strong support for real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, following the findings of Project Acacia. Assistant Governor Brad Jones stated that tokenized finance and infrastructure upgrades will be revolutionary for the economy.
RBA's Project Acacia Findings
Project Acacia, a collaborative effort between the RBA, the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre, and industry groups, analyzed how tokenized assets could enhance Australia's wholesale financial markets. The project built on a previous central bank digital currency pilot and estimated potential annual economic gains of $16.7 billion from RWA tokenization.
Jones emphasized that these gains could grow even larger if new markets develop, shifting the focus from whether tokenization has a future to how it can be implemented in Australia's financial system.
Plans for a Digital Finance Sandbox
The RBA will partner with agencies and industry groups to establish a new digital financial market infrastructure (DFMI) sandbox. This initiative aims to provide a safe environment for testing and scaling tokenized assets, stablecoins, and infrastructure, potentially integrating with a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
Specific areas of interest include the interaction of wholesale CBDC with bank deposit tokens and the synchronization of tokenized asset ledgers with the Reserve Bank Information and Transfer System (RITS).
Globally, consulting firm McKinsey & Company has projected that the value of tokenized assets could reach nearly $2 trillion by 2030, while Australia's securities regulator head Joe Longo urged the country to adopt these technologies to avoid being left behind.
The RWA sector has seen rapid growth, with onchain value surging 234% over the past year to a record $27.5 billion, excluding stablecoins, according to RWA.xyz. This expansion occurs despite broader challenges in the crypto market, highlighting tokenization's potential.
