Peter Magyar, once part of Viktor Orban's inner circle, now leads a challenge in Hungary's elections with a focus on anti-corruption and economic reform.
Peter Magyar, a 45-year-old former insider in Hungary's ruling Fidesz party, is mounting a significant challenge to Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the upcoming 12 April elections. Opinion polls indicate he could win, marking the biggest threat to Orban since 2010.
Campaign Momentum Builds
Magyar's campaign features the slogan 'Now or never,' inspired by a 19th-century revolutionary poet. He has visited all 106 Hungarian constituencies, delivering up to six speeches daily and building support even in Fidesz strongholds like small towns and villages.
Last year, Magyar walked 300 kilometers from Budapest to the Romanian border to 'reunite' the nation, aiming to attract traditional Fidesz voters. His efforts have included outreach to Hungary's disadvantaged Roma community.
Magyar promises to tackle corruption, improve the economy, and unlock billions of euros in frozen EU funds due to concerns over Hungary's rule of law. Orban has labeled him a 'puppet' of the EU and Ukraine, while Magyar positions his party as one of peace.
Until February 2024, Magyar was deeply embedded in Fidesz, having joined at university and marrying Judit Varga, a rising party star with whom he had three children. He served as a diplomat in Brussels and on boards of state-owned companies.
In a pivotal February 2024 interview on the YouTube channel Partizán, watched by a million viewers, Magyar criticized Fidesz for its handling of a scandal involving a pardon for a man who covered up sexual abuse in a state-run children's home. This led to the resignation of President Katalin Novak and Varga, who had co-signed the pardon.
On 15 March 2024, during Hungary's national holiday, Magyar addressed about 10,000 people, announcing his new party and accusing Fidesz of corruption and economic mismanagement. His gradual disaffection with the party stemmed from its evolution since he joined in 2002.
Magyar's high-profile actions, including releasing a secret recording of a conversation with Varga, have intensified the election race, though she accused him of abuse, which he denied.
