Several Injured as Turbulence Hits Delta Flight from Los Angeles to Sydney

A Delta Airlines flight experienced turbulence, injuring several on board, as it approached Sydney Airport.

Delta Flight 41 from Los Angeles to Sydney encountered brief turbulence on Friday morning, resulting in injuries to several people on board. The airline confirmed that the Airbus A350 aircraft experienced the turbulence as it prepared to land at Sydney Airport.

The New South Wales Ambulance Service assessed five patients at the scene, with three individuals taken to hospital for minor injuries including back pain and headaches. The patients ranged in age from their 30s to 70s, and four of the injured were flight attendants, according to Delta Airlines.

The flight carried 245 passengers and 15 crew members. It landed safely and normally at Sydney Airport at 06:48 local time, with emergency vehicles waiting on the tarmac after a call received just three minutes before landing.

Recent Turbulence Incidents

Last year, a Delta Airlines flight from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam hit significant turbulence, injuring 25 people and requiring an emergency landing. In a separate event earlier in 2024, a Singapore Airlines flight experienced severe turbulence, resulting in one death and dozens of injuries.

Turbulence incidents occur frequently in air travel, with estimates indicating around 5,000 cases of severe-or-greater turbulence annually out of more than 35 million global flights. Severe turbulence is defined as movements exerting more than 1.5g-force on passengers, potentially lifting unsecured individuals from their seats.

Experts have linked the rise in turbulence to climate change, citing shifts in atmospheric conditions like temperature changes and wind patterns. This incident adds to ongoing concerns about air travel safety amid these trends.

Delta Airlines has not released further details on the cause of the turbulence, and investigations are underway. Sydney Airport operations continued normally following the event.
