Germany: Efforts Continue to Free Stranded Humpback Whale

A humpback whale remains stuck in shallow waters off Germany's coast, as authorities prepare for another rescue attempt.

A young humpback whale, approximately 10 meters long, has been stranded on a sandbank in Lübeck Bay since Monday, according to reports from marine conservation groups.

Initial rescue attempts using a suction dredger failed due to insufficient power to remove the compact sand, as stated by Carsten Mannheimer of Sea Shepherd.

Rescue Operations and Challenges

Larger machinery is en route and expected to arrive by Thursday to aid in dredging efforts and free the whale, which experts believe got stuck during migration.

The whale's back is visible above water, and its sounds can be heard from hundreds of meters away, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

In related news, Greenpeace activists in Berlin protested early Wednesday by hanging a 100-square-meter banner near the Chancellery, criticizing the government's climate protection program for falling short of emission reduction targets.

The activists claimed the program lacks measures to meet the 65% greenhouse gas reduction goal by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, amid rising fuel and gas prices.

Separately, police in western Germany implemented highway closures to secure a convoy transporting nuclear waste, ensuring safe passage through the region.
