Authorities in Kenya search for ex-minister Raphael Tuju amid allegations of abduction, as his ongoing legal battles come under scrutiny.
Kenyans police are investigating the reported disappearance of former Foreign Minister Raphael Tuju and his driver, who vanished while heading to an evening radio interview on Saturday.
Tuju's family stated that the ex-minister's vehicle was found abandoned with its hazard lights on in Karen, an upmarket suburb of Nairobi, and his phone was switched off, making him unreachable.
Background on Tuju's Legal Disputes
Raphael Tuju, who previously served as foreign minister and held other roles, is embroiled in a long-running legal battle over unpaid bank loans exceeding $15 million linked to properties owned by his company, Dari Limited.
Tuju has alleged that police officers raided his property in Karen, removed staff and security, and that powerful officials are attempting to seize his assets; the government has not commented on these claims.
Despite multiple unsuccessful legal challenges, Tuju recently obtained court orders to halt the transfer of his properties until his latest application is heard.
Before disappearing, Tuju's lawyer reported to police that the ex-minister was being trailed by an unmarked vehicle, adding to concerns about his safety.
Police have deployed a specialized team to handle the case, coordinating with other government agencies to locate Tuju, and have urged the public to provide any useful information while calling for full cooperation from his family.
Opposition figures, including Governor James Orengo and Lawmaker Otiende Amollo, have alleged that Tuju may have been abducted, pressing authorities for answers and emphasizing the need to protect him.
