Rising Islamophobia in Australia as Muslims Mark Eid in Sydney

Muslims in Australia observe Eid while facing increased Islamophobia, highlighted by community gatherings and rising incident reports.

Australia's Muslim community gathered for Eid celebrations in Sydney's Lakemba suburb, even as reports indicate a sharp rise in Islamophobic incidents. According to the Islamophobia Register Australia, incidents have increased by 636% since Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023, averaging 18 cases per week.

Community Events Amid Security Concerns

In Lakemba, thousands attended a community Iftar during Ramadan, with tables set for families to break their fast. The event included private security and police surveillance trailers, requested by community leaders following several threats.

Gamel Kheir, secretary of the Lebanese Muslim Association, organized the Iftar and stated that the Muslim community faces challenging times in Australia, emphasizing the need for unity. Antisemitic incidents have also risen, with the Executive Council of Australian Jewry reporting nearly five times more cases than before 7 October 2023.

The Bondi Beach massacre in December further escalated tensions, driven by Islamic State ideology according to police, leading to a 201% increase in reported Islamophobia. Nora Amath, executive director of the Islamophobia Register Australia, noted that these figures likely under-represent the true scale due to underreporting.

During a visit by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke to Lakemba mosque, some worshippers voiced frustration, accusing the government of supporting a genocide in the Middle East. Lakemba, home to about 61% Muslims per the 2021 census, serves as a cultural hub with influences from Lebanese and South Asian communities.

Residents like Dr. Moshiuzzaman Shakil shared experiences of discrimination, such as losing a client after the Bondi attack due to assumptions about Muslims. Australia's history includes events like the 2005 Cronulla riots, which highlighted racial tensions and remain a point of reference in current discussions.
