Ex-FBI chief Robert Mueller, known for his role in the Trump-Russia probe, passed away at 81, drawing varied reactions from U.S. leaders.
Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who served for 12 years and led a major investigation into Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, died at the age of 81, as announced by his family on Saturday.
Mueller took over as FBI director in 2001, just days before the September 11 attacks, and was instrumental in expanding the agency's counterterrorism efforts. He had a distinguished career as a Marine in Vietnam and as a prosecutor in cases involving figures like New York mobster John Gotti and Panama's General Manuel Noriega.
Mueller's Role in the Trump Investigation
In 2017, Mueller was appointed as special counsel to investigate potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. His team issued charges against 34 individuals, including six Trump associates, and three companies over two years.
The investigation's 448-page report detailed substantial contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia but did not allege a criminal conspiracy. Mueller stated that the report did not exonerate Trump on obstruction of justice.
Following Mueller's death, Donald Trump posted on his social media platform, saying, "Robert Mueller just died. Good, I'm glad he's dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!"
Former President Barack Obama, who overlapped with Mueller's FBI tenure, described him as one of the finest directors in FBI history and praised his commitment to the rule of law. President George W. Bush, who nominated Mueller, expressed sadness and highlighted his lifelong dedication to public service.
Mueller retired from the FBI in 2013 after extending his term at President Obama's request and was called back for the Trump probe after Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey.
