Trump's latest remarks on potentially leaving NATO raise concerns about the alliance's future, as he criticizes members for not supporting US actions.
US President Donald Trump told Britain's Telegraph newspaper that he is reconsidering US membership in NATO, emphasizing that allies should automatically join American military operations, such as those against Iran.
NATO, a 77-year-old alliance with 32 members, operates under Article 5, which requires consensus for collective defense and applies only to crises in Europe and North America. This principle has been invoked once, following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the US.
Trump's Historical Criticism of NATO
Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO, calling it obsolete and costly during his first term, and pressuring members to meet the 2% GDP defense spending guideline set in 2014. Many allies have increased spending in response, partly due to Trump's threats and Russia's actions in Ukraine.
In the Ukraine conflict, which began with Russia's invasion in February 2022, the US under President Joe Biden led Western responses, while NATO as an entity provided assistance without direct involvement to avoid escalation.
Trump's Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed these sentiments, stating that NATO relations may need re-examination after current conflicts, and noting that US bases in Europe are not always used for American interests. For instance, Britain initially denied access to US warplanes but later allowed it for defensive operations, while Italy and Spain restricted US aircraft.
The US Congress passed legislation in late 2023 prohibiting a president from withdrawing from NATO without Senate approval or an act of Congress. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is working to maintain alliance cohesion amid these threats.
The US military's significant contributions, including 62% of NATO's total defense spending, underscore its central role, though European countries and Canada are bolstering their own defenses in response to ongoing pressures.
