India provided emergency medical aid to Afghanistan following a deadly airstrike by Pakistan.
India has dispatched 2.5 tons of emergency medical supplies, including medicine, medical disposables, and equipment, to Kabul to assist in treating those injured in a Pakistani airstrike earlier this week.
Background of the Airstrike
On March 16, 2026, Afghan Taliban officials reported that a Pakistani airstrike targeted a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, resulting in at least 400 deaths. Pakistan denied the accusations, stating that its strikes aimed at military and terrorist targets in Kabul and Nangarhar province.
India condemned the airstrike as an act of aggression against a sovereign Afghanistan. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated on social media that India stands in solidarity with Afghanistan and will provide humanitarian support.
In recent years, India has adjusted its policy toward Afghanistan, including restoring its mission in Kabul to embassy status last year, despite not recognizing the Taliban government. India has been a major regional provider of aid to Afghanistan in previous years.
A pause in fighting between Pakistan and the Taliban government is currently in effect due to Eid al-Fitr celebrations, lasting until midnight on March 23, 2026. This development occurs amid heightened clashes, including cross-border fire and airstrikes.
India's aid shipment reflects its ongoing commitment to humanitarian assistance in the region, especially as relations between the Afghan Taliban and Pakistan have deteriorated.
Additionally, India has criticized Pakistan's actions as hostile, marking a continuation of tensions that escalated with Pakistan declaring an open war in February 2026.
