Police in Australia ended a seven-month manhunt by fatally shooting a suspect wanted for killing two officers.
Australian police shot and killed a 56-year-old man believed to be Desmond Freeman during a standoff at a rural property in Walwa, Victoria, on March 30, 2026. The man was suspected of fatally shooting two police officers and wounding another in August 2025.
The incident followed a seven-month manhunt involving more than 450 officers, one of the largest operations in Australian history. Police had been tracking Freeman after he allegedly evaded capture with possible help from sympathetic locals.
Background of the Original Attack
In August 2025, officers raided Freeman's property in Porepunkah, about 300 kilometers northeast of Melbourne, as part of an investigation into sex offenses. During the raid, Detective Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart were killed, and another officer was injured.
Victorian Chief Commissioner of Police Mike Bush stated that the suspect was given an opportunity to surrender peacefully but refused. The standoff lasted three hours before police fired, resulting in his death.
Freeman was described by local media as a member of the 'sovereign citizen' movement, which views government authority as illegitimate. Police did not provide further details on his affiliations during the operation.
The Police Association of Victoria emphasized the bravery of the fallen officers and those involved in the manhunt, stating, 'We will remember the courage and bravery of our fallen members and every officer that has doggedly pursued this outcome for the community.'
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, with formal identification of the deceased still pending. This event marks a significant conclusion to a high-profile case in Australian law enforcement history.
