An exit poll shows Slovenia's Freedom Movement party edging ahead with 29.9 percent of votes, while the opposition Slovenian Democratic Party trails with an expected 27 seats.
Slovenia's governing Freedom Movement (GS) party is projected to win a parliamentary election based on an exit poll conducted by TV Slovenia and Pop TV, securing 29.9 percent of the votes and 30 seats in the 90-seat parliament.
This result marks a decline from GS's previous performance, where it held 41 seats, indicating a tighter race that may require the party to seek additional coalition partners to form a government.
Election Projections and Opposition Performance
The opposition Slovenian Democratic Party, led by Janez Jansa, is expected to finish second according to the Mediana polling agency, with projections of 27 seats in parliament.
Incumbent Prime Minister Robert Golob, aged 59, voted in the election and urged citizens to participate, stating that 'Democracy and Slovenia’s sovereignty cannot be taken for granted any more.'
Janez Jansa, who has served as prime minister three times including from 2020 to 2022, responded to the exit poll results by saying he would wait for final outcomes and analyze the situation, noting that his party had done all it could.
The election faced controversy after reports alleged that Jansa met with officials from the Israeli firm Black Cube in December, with Golob describing it as foreign interference in a democratic EU member state's elections.
Published by Al Jazeera, the exit poll results were released on March 22, 2026, highlighting the close contest in Slovenia's parliamentary race.
