Ukraine and Qatar agreed to collaborate on defense technologies amid ongoing conflicts, as Zelenskyy seeks partnerships to bolster security.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Doha on March 28, 2026, for an unannounced visit, where he and Qatari officials signed a defense cooperation agreement. The pact focuses on joint efforts in high-tech projects and exchanging expertise to counter missile and drone threats.
Under the agreement, Ukraine and Qatar will collaborate on technological developments and investments, including sharing battlefield knowledge gained from Ukraine's defense against Russian attacks. This deal builds on similar pacts Ukraine signed with Saudi Arabia earlier in the week and a verbal agreement with the United Arab Emirates.
Ukraine's Role in Drone Defense
Ukraine has positioned itself as a leader in anti-drone warfare after years of conflict with Russia. Kyiv is offering its expertise to Gulf states facing threats from Iranian drones, with Zelenskyy emphasizing that "real security is built on partnership" in a social media statement.
Earlier this month, Ukraine dispatched 201 anti-drone military experts to assist the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait in countering such threats. This cooperation comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East due to the US-Israel conflict with Iran.
Meanwhile, Russian forces launched 273 drones targeting Ukrainian cities including Odesa, Poltava, and Kryvyi Rih on the same day. Ukrainian defenses downed or jammed 252 of these, with Zelenskyy reporting that 60 drones hit Odesa, damaging port infrastructure and causing civilian casualties without any military purpose.
The Qatari defense ministry confirmed the agreement includes collaboration in technological fields and joint investments for countering unmanned aerial systems. In response to Iranian claims of destroying a Ukrainian depot in the UAE, the Ukrainian foreign ministry denied the allegations, calling them disinformation.
Many of the drones used by Russia are based on Iranian designs, highlighting the global implications of drone technology in ongoing conflicts. Ukraine's partnerships with Gulf nations underscore efforts to strengthen international alliances against such threats.
